Günter Gerhard Lange, then the art director of Berthold, undertook a project in the 1950s to expand the font family, adding a bigger character set but keeping all of the 1898 faces quirks. Theinhardt amalgamated with Berthold later and offered the standard, medium, and bold weights as well. Originally known as “Accidenz-Grotesk,” the design is based on royal type cutter Ferdinand Theinhardt’s Royal Grotesk illumination. In 1898, Berthold published Akzidenz-Grotesk for the first time.
